Anti-ragging technology delivers results at Nigg WwTP

Kelda Water Services (Grampian) have made substantial cost savings at their Nigg Wastewater Treatment Plant, thanks to the installation of two Deragger IIs from Clearwater Controls. This innovative yet affordable technology works in real time to ensure pumps run constantly clean impellers, thus eradicating the costly and time-consuming necessity of manually lifting them to clear blockages.

Prior to installation of the Deragger II wastewater pump management system on a tanker dump tank, two 5.2 kW Hydrostal DOL transfer pumps at Nigg were blocking three or more times daily. This resulted in large fines whenever tankers were held up by more than thirty minutes.

Since the installation of the Deragger IIs in October 2013, Nigg has reported only one blockage (on a single pump) – caused by no less than a curtain-like material.

Noel Gallagher, Project Engineer at Kelda Water Services (Grampian), said, “We’ve had no problems since installing the Deraggers at Nigg. They are doing their job and improving the efficiency of the plant.”

Benefits of installing Deragger II over replacing VFD

There are many benefits to installing the Deragger II over replacing your existing VFD with an Anti-Ragging type.  The low cost nature of the Deragger II far outweighs the price of installing a brand new VFD. This will provide you with all the functionality of the new VFD. As well as Anti-ragging the Deragger II will provide all the power analysis of the VFD as well as the typical motor protection found in a modern VFD.

Dry Weather Flow

With all the dry weather we have been having the sewer flows are low. This low flow causes debris and rags to build in the sewer system as the flow is insufficient to push these down the sewer pipe into the wet well storage tanks. As soon rain falls the debris and rags all flow into the well all at once instead of a slow constant rate. This sudden barrage of rags in most cases will overpower the pumps and cause blockages. With the Deragger II’s® patented real time detection, it can detect the blockage before it blocks the pump. The pump will then be put into a clean cycle to break up the rag and allow it to pass forward to the waste water treatment plant where it is dealt with correctly.
